Now owned by Diageo, it was for a time used as a research site to explore the impacts and effects of copper, reflux and worm tubs on scotch whisky.

Linkwood’s six stills are pear shaped and with tall conical necks. Its wort is extremely clear, its fermentation period very long and its copper contact maximized. All of these contribute to the quintessential Linkwood fragrance, notes of a spring meadow sprinkled with apple and peach orchards. Popular in Diageo blends, the spirit’s fresh and light aromas carry through to the palate, along with a thick full body that’s appreciated by those scotch drinkers lucky enough to get their hands on a single malt bottling. Diageo releases Linkwood single malts in its Flora and Fauna series (not available to the U.S. market) but independent bottler releases are very popular among whisky fans across the United Kingdom and continental Europe. Founded in 1824, by local Alexander Ramsay, the Fettercairn Distillery turned hands shortly after its inception when in 1830, it was sold to John Gladstone. Interestingly, Sir John was the father of four-time British prime minister, William Ewart Gladstone. The distillery changed hands several more times over the years and today it is a part of the Whyte & Mackay portfolio. For many years, Fettercairn was primarily used in blends but in 2018, Whyte & Mackay launched a re-brand of the Fettercairn brand, releasing several single malts of various age statements.

What really makes Fettercairn different from other distilleries is its unique still set up. In the 1950’s the distillery decided to do a little experimentation – they tried a bunch of different things but one in particular, an unusual contraption that runs cool water down the outside of the still and cools the copper resonated with the team. That experimentation was such a success, Fettercairn still runs fresh water from the Cairngorms down the side of its stills today. The team claims that the cool mountain water running on the stills gives Fettercairn those fruity tropical notes everyone loves. Can you taste the difference in the whisky? Churning out up to 60 million liters of alcohol annually, it is one of eight grain distilleries in Scotland and the last in Edinburgh. Founded in 1885 by Andrew Usher, William Sanderson and John Crabbie, these three industry titans joined forces to ensure their independent blending houses had a direct and reliable source for their grain spirit. The team raised funds from local business owners to finance the distillery, which sounds a lot like crowd funding today. Turns out their intuitions about the demand for whisky around the turn of the century were spot on as shareholders received an astonishing 440% ROI during the distillery’s first 20 years of operation!

It’s name, North British, is often a point of confusion as the distillery is located in Scotland. Although independent bottlers have released expressions with age statements, the bottles are rare, difficult to track down and normally quite expensive. Lingdarroch is the trade name for the peated distillate from the most southernly distillery in Scotland. Need another hint? It’s located in Scotland’s National Book Town, Wigtown and produces both peated and non-peated whiskies. It’s also a quick boat ride across the Irish Sea to Northern Ireland. Still not sure, we’ll spill the beans, Lingdarroch hails from the beautiful Bladnoch Distillery.

We thought it would be fun to let the US taste how the liquid comes right off the Scottish stills. This peated new make spirit, does just that. Bottled at 62.9% ABV, this is an unaged spirit, with absolutely no dilution or added water; not for the faint of heart. Taste it, share it or age it on your own. Experiment with how aging, time in the wood and flavors add to and enhance this high-quality liquid from Bladnoch Distillery. Consider a whisky making kit or bar top mini barrel to age your own whisky.

Curious about where this marvelous new make hails from? Here’s a bit more about Scotland’s most southernly distillery. Like many distilleries, Bladnoch traces its roots to farming, with two brothers securing a license to officially distill whisky on their farm in 1817. For nearly a century, the distillery stayed with the family until 1905 when production was shut down due to lower demand for scotch whisky.

In 1911, the distillery was resurrected by Dunville & Co, a Belfast distiller who saw the potential but once again in 1937, Bladnoch was shuttered. Many additional owners came and went over the years, including Ross & Coulter (who actually sold off the aging stock and the distilling equipment), Inver House, Bell’s, and Diageo. In 1993, Guiness (now part of Diageo decommissioned Bladnoch and it sat empty until two more brothers came along. These brothers, the Armstrongs hailed from Northern Ireland and originally had plans for a resort at the site, but they too soon caught the whisky bug. However, as the terms of the sales contract with Diageo prohibited them from making whisky on site, it took a long six years for them to persuade Diageo to allow them to produce a small amount of spirit. So small that the whisky production was never really profitable and the brothers made most of their income from tourism and on-site storage.

Fast forward to today, and the Bladnoch Distillery is thriving under the ownership of Australian businessman David Prior. Prior purchased Bladnoch in 2015 and after extensive refurbishment, the stills once again began flowing in 2017. In 2019, Master Distiller Dr. Nick Savage, formerly of The Macallan, joined Bladnoch. It passed through several hands over the years, but in 1933, it was sold to Arthur Bell & Sons the famous Perth blender, who utilized the Blair Athol spirits for its blended whiskies of the same name. During this era, the production at Blair Athol was doubled, driven by the popularity of Bell’s blended whiskies. In the mid 1980’s, Guinness purchased Bell’s and in 1997, the distillery became part of Diageo.

The cloudy wort and shorter fermentations at Blair Athol give the malt its signature nutty and spicy style. Even today, most the distillate produced at Blair Athol ends up in Bell’s. Diageo does release a single malt under its Flora and Fauna series and can you guess which creature graces these bottles? The otter, of course, which frolics in the waters of the Allt Dour. There is much confusion in the distillery’s region – it’s a short jump from Campbeltown but also not far from the Lowlands region. Or is it an island whisky? Prior to a modernization project in 2007, the distillation at Benrinnes was quite complex and involved a partial triple distillation. This process was simplified by moving to a more traditional double process. Yet, Benrinnes still retains its meaty composition and light and floral notes, favored in many Speyside single malts. Benrinnes is typically only released as a single malt in Diageo’s Flora and Fauna series but unfortunately for the U.S. this release is not available in the American market. Fortunately, however, many independent bottlers have embraced the Benrinnes single malt, releasing it in various age statements and cask finishes.

Cask Number: 483

ABV: 57.8%

Cask Type: Fresh Ex-Bourbon

Bottles: 247

Bottle Size: 700ml

Nose: Green Apple, Tropical Fruit, Vanilla, Peat Smoke

Palate: Smoky Caramel, Tropical Fruits, Apple, Oak Shavings, Oily Texture

Finish: Long, Oily, Sweet

Natural color, non-chill filtered.

About Annandale Distillery

Nestled within the Dumfries and Galloway region of the Scottish Lowlands, Annandale Distillery is renowned for its craftsmanship and commitment to quality.
