Tobermory Distillery - Island Tradition, Two Distinct Styles
The Tobermory Distillery, situated in the charming waterfront town of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, offers a glimpse into centuries of Scottish whisky-making tradition. Established in 1798, it stands as one of Scotland’s oldest distilleries, quietly producing spirit in one of Scotland’s most picturesque harbor towns.
What makes Tobermory particularly unique is its dual identity. Alongside its unpeated single malt released under the Tobermory name, the distillery also produces a heavily peated style known as Ledaig, both highly regarded in the whisky community. Transitioning between these two styles is no small feat, requiring a meticulous two-week cleaning process of all equipment to ensure purity of character.
Tobermory’s history has been anything but linear. Originally operating as a brewery, the distillery has seen multiple closures over the years, most notably lying dormant between 1930 and 1972. Today, it operates with renewed energy and focus, emphasizing quality cask selection and creative finishes, a direction that has drawn increasing attention from whisky enthusiasts. It's a part of the Distill Ventures portfolio, alongside Bunnahabhain and Deanston.
For those exploring independent bottlings, Tobermory and Ledaig offer a compelling range of styles, and you can find select expressions in our current collection, often highlighting unique cask maturations not seen in official releases.
Located near the main port, the distillery is deeply woven into the fabric of the town. Visitors can easily walk to nearby landmarks like the Mishnish Pub or the Western Isles Hotel, while the Gearr Abhainn water source flows past the distillery directly into the sea. Due to space constraints, however, most maturation takes place off-site at its sister distillery, Deanston, as many of the original warehouses have been converted into residential flats.
