Tomintoul Distillery is a Speyside distillery located near its namesake village of Tomintoul and within the confines of the stunning Cairngorms National Park. Tomintoul sits high in the Cairngorm Mountains, keeping good company with its many neighbors, Glenlivet, Tamnavulin and Cragganmore to name a few. The site is surrounded by the picturesque Cairngorm mountains and the River Avon, the River Spey’s largest tributary, runs next to the distillery. Established in 1965, Tomintoul is a new distillery by Speyside standards where many distilleries can trace their roots to the 1700 and 1800s.
In its early years as a workhorse distillery in the Hay & MacLeod and W. & S. Strong portfolio the malt was known for its fruity floral flavors and used primarily in blends. When Whyte & Mackay purchased Tomintoul in 1973 it remained a major component for blended whiskies. It wasn’t until its current owner, Angus Dundee Distillers purchased the site in 2000 that the brand was introduced as a single malt. Angus Dundee continues to produce distillate at Tomintoul for its own blends and for contract but now markets Tomintoul as the quality single malt it is. Tomintoul is marketed as the gentle dram, a very approachable single malt for enthusiasts and those new to whisky. In recent years, the team has explored releasing single malts of different age statements and cask finishes.
