Balmenach Distillery - Speyside the Old-Fashioned Way

The Balmenach Distillery is a traditional Speyside distillery, about as traditional as they come. Small stills, wooden washbacks and worm tubs still dominate the site. There has been little change to the age-old traditions carried out here over the years.

Located near the village of Cromdale in southern Speyside, Balmenach traces its roots back to 1824, when a local farmer, allegedly operating what he claimed was merely a “peat shed," was encouraged by the tax man to make things official and obtain a license.

Through the late 19th and early 20th centuries, neighboring distillery Glenlivet held ownership of Balmenach before control shifted again in the 1930s to Scottish Malt Distillers. After a period of mothballing in the 1990s, the distillery was eventually revived under its current owner, Inver House Distillers.

Today, Inver House relies on Balmenach’s rich, characterful spirit as a key component in its blends. As a result, official single malt releases from the distillery are virtually nonexistent. For whisky enthusiasts, that makes independent bottlings the only real window into what Balmenach can offer and you can occasionally find examples in our stocks when we’re lucky enough to source them.

Independent releases of Balmenach are few and far between, often appearing as single cask expressions that highlight the distillery’s robust, slightly rustic Speyside profile.
