About the Aberfeldy Distillery

When one hears Aberfeldy, one thinks Dewar’s. The Dewar family is after all the namesake behind what many consider the world’s most popular blended whisky.  And it all started here in the small but prosperous Perthshire town of Aberfeldy. Born in 1805 just outside Aberfeldy on a small croft, John Dewar got his start in a family member’s Perth wine business. Within a few years he was dabbling in the whisky trade and had set up his own blending business. By the end of the 19th century, Dewar’s blended whisky was shipped and sold throughout the world and John’s successors, his sons needed their own distillery to ensure a steady and reliable source of liquid for their popular blends. Although the Speyside region was the most popular spot for new distilleries at the time, the Dewar sons John Alexander and Tommy, chose a site just outside the village of Aberfeldy, staying true to their father’s Perthshire roots. The John Dewar and Sons Aberfeldy Distillery was opened in 1898, supplying its highland blended whisky to fans around the world ever since.

Aberfeldy Distillery is located in the Perthshire region of Scotland. Driving north from the busy city of Perth, one passes through some absolutely stunning landscapes. Mountains, lochs, forests, streams – Perthshire has all that and more. The small but well-appointed town of Aberfeldy is thriving, supported by tourism from the nearby distillery and those seeking solace in nature. It is no wonder John Dewar and Sons chose this location for their own distillery. Although there are many other distilleries around Scotland connected to Dewar’s, Aberfeldy is the only distillery built by the Dewar family.

But there is certainly more to the lovely Aberfeldy Distillery than Dewar’s. Aberfeldy single malts are renowned for their smooth and sweet honey and heather flavors. Aberfeldy’s long fermentation in its larch wood washbacks and long distillation in its tall stills all contribute to this flavor, along with its fresh water source, the Pitilie Burn which runs directly beside the distillery. The distillery is a tremendous destination for fans of Dewar’s blended malts and the Aberfeldy single malts alike. An enormous and welcoming visitor center offers education, in the form of a small museum, an onsite café and tasting bar as well as a well-stocked shop.  With the influence of the cult American Buffalo Trace bourbon on the finish, this 9-year-old single cask Aberfeldy from Dràm Mòr does not disappoint. A great dram for both scotch aficionados and bourbon fans looking to explore scotch!
