About Tobermory Distillery

Ledaig is the name for prized peated malt produced at the Tobermory Distillery. The Tobermory Distillery, situated in the charming waterfront town of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, offers a glimpse into centuries of Scottish whisky-making tradition. Established in 1798, it stands as one of Scotland's oldest distilleries. Uniquely, Tobermory produces both unpeated malt under its own name and peated malt known as Ledaig, both highly regarded in the whisky community. The process of switching between these styles requires meticulous two-week cleaning of all equipment.

The distillery's history is marked by transitions, beginning as a brewery and experiencing periods of inactivity, most notably from 1930 to 1972. Today, Tobermory is part of the Distill Ventures portfolio, alongside Bunnahabhain and Deanston. This ownership has brought renewed focus to the distillery, emphasizing cask quality and finishes.

Located near the main port, Tobermory Distillery is an integral part of the town, within walking distance of local landmarks like the Mishnish Pub and the Western Isles Hotel. The Gearr Abhainn, its water source, flows directly past the distillery to the sea. Due to the limited space, most of Tobermory's whisky maturation occurs at its sister distillery, Deanston, on mainland Scotland, as the nearby warehouses have been converted into residential flats.
