The result is a whisky that marries Blair Athol's rich, malty Highland character with vibrant citrus, sweet agave and gentle pepper spice.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Bright citrus peel, honey, vanilla, baked apple, fresh herbs, and soft agave sweetness are balanced by gentle oak spice and floral notes.

Palate

Why We Bottled It

Long a tequila enthusiast, Scotch Drinkers Only founder Howard has always been fascinated by the way tequila casks can add brightness and complexity to a mature whisky. When the time came to launch our own bottling line, he knew a tequila finish had to be part of the collection: a whisky for the curious, adventurous drinker who enjoys exploring the unexpected.

This Blair Athol spent its first 10 years maturing in ex-bourbon before being re-racked into a first fill ex-Reposado tequila cask. Rather than rushing the finish, we sampled the cask patiently, waiting for the tequila influence to complement the whisky rather than dominate it.

When we drew the final sample, we knew the time was right.

The result is a beautifully balanced Highland single malt that layers Blair Athol's rich, malty character with vibrant citrus, gentle agave sweetness, fresh herbs, and warming spice, bringing just a touch of Mexican sunshine to a classic Scottish whisky.

Blair Athol Distillery - Gateway to the Highlands

Located in the village of Pitlochry, in the shadow of the Grampian Mountains, Blair Athol is an easy and highly rewarding stop just off the A9. This part of Scotland, often referred to as the gateway to the Highlands, offers the perfect transition from the Lowlands into more rugged northern terrain.

Approaching the distillery, visitors pass traditional dunnage warehouses, vibrant hanging baskets, and sweeping weeping willow trees before crossing a small bridge over the Allt Dour, “the burn of the otter,” the distillery’s water source.

Inside the visitor center, your eyes are immediately drawn to a bar crafted from an actual mash tun, pouring distillery exclusives alongside a wide range of Diageo malts. Step beyond the main building and into the courtyard, and you’re transported back in time. Once the operational heart of the distillery, this space welcomed deliveries of barley and shipped out finished whisky. Today, it’s framed by ivy-covered stone buildings and overflowing with flowers, a setting that feels as timeless as the whisky itself.

Founded in 1798, Blair Athol is one of Scotland’s oldest distilleries. It changed hands several times before being acquired in 1933 by Arthur Bell & Sons, who used its spirit as a cornerstone of Bell’s blended whisky. Production ramped up significantly during this period to meet demand, and that legacy continues today under Diageo ownership.

Blair Athol’s character is shaped by its cloudy wort and shorter fermentation, resulting in a signature profile of nutty richness and gentle spice. While most of its output still goes into blends, single malt expressions, particularly from independent bottlers, offer a rare chance to experience the distillery in full.
